the perfect boiled egg

P1080943

I know it’s supposed to be one of the easiest things to make, but I’ve had quite a time of it learning to boil eggs. Recently, I found the perfect recipe for my family’s tastes and preferences. This method makes for a nice yolk and an easy peel job. Hope it works as well for you!

Place six eggs in a pot and cover with warm water. Don’t fill the pot.

Bring pot to a boil, for a total time of ten to twelve minutes. Add more time for more eggs.

Place pot under running cold water, allowing it overflow and replace hot water.

Add ice, and give it about ten minutes or until the ice melts and the water is cool.

Peel and store in airtight container in refrigerator. Enjoy all week long!

frugal family living

P1080935

Hey, folks… I’m teaching an Influence Network class this month and I’d love to have you.

Class Description: Calling all fast foodies and granola hippies! It doesn’t matter if you keep an endless stock of disposable water bottles, or use cloth toilet paper (it really does exist)… this class is for you. Most of us could use a little fresh inspiration when it comes to making frugality work for us. Whether you’re a single gal or a mama to many, there’s a sweet spot to be found in finances, meal planning, and general household tasks. Rachael will explore the concept of stewardship within the home, hopefully helping you find ways to save a little cash in the process.

the wonder of Wunderlist.

photo

While on toddler potty patrol at Trader Joe’s last night, I posted this silly selfie with a plug for my favorite task-making app. Several of you are already fans, but many of you asked questions about the gem known as Wunderlist. Let’s talk!

Wunderlist is a list-making app that allows you to sync with other users. Chris & I keep several between our phones, with categories like Out and About and Target and Honey-do. There’s even Daddy Dreamin’, a place for him to throw out all of his wild ideas about music projects and gear. When something gets checked off the list, it notifies the other user. I’ve even brought the big boys on board, with a Commissions list for weekly chores. They don’t necessarily refer to the list to help them remember, but we all leave each other goofy notes on each task and it keeps us on the same page.

Like I said on Instagram, I can’t recommend this app enough. I’m able to get in and out of the grocery store in just a few minutes, and I save money by sticking to what’s on the list. I simply un-check items to add them back to the list, which is great for basics like bread and cereal. I haven’t decided if we’ll upgrade or not, but for now, the basic free version works just fine!

fashion household management

The cheapest, easiest DIY ever.

We re-did Lucas’ room for his birthday this month, and I used this tutorial for a t-shirt garland to hang on his walls. I bought nearly thirty tees at Goodwill, so I was left with quite a few intact sleeves…

Enter the perfect circle scarf – or bib! Simply roll the sleeve evenly around the neck, or rotate them so that the longer portion hangs down the front, like a kerchief. All four of my kiddos are currently running around the house with one of these as we speak, and the baby goes through one or two per day. They are perfect for mopping up baby food and other goodies from her cheeks. Play around with different sized tees to get different looks.

I was obviously sticking to a theme with color and texture this time, for the sake of the garland project. Next time, though, I’ll try out some different shirts and look for some fun prints. Any sort of no-sew project is right up my alley, so I’ll be keeping this in mind for next winter’s wardrobes… myself included!

quick tips for the holiday-wary… and weary.

P1080783

As a recovering grinch, I thought I’d share some of the things that have made holidays all the more light for me in recent months. I use Valentine’s Day as an example because it can be one of the most polarizing… and it’s today?

4. Start early and finish late. As soon as I took down Christmas decorations last year, I started thinking about the month of love. Just getting into a holiday mindset does wonders for daily drudgery. Two of my planned adventures got canceled due to snow, so we’re rescheduling for next week. There are no rules, no starting or finish lines! Don’t get caught up in the commercialism discussions or the calendar dates. Just stick it to the winter blues with some extra cheer this month.

3. Get out of the house. These trips don’t have to be expensive or over the top, just deliberate. Our February adventures? I brought Ames grocery shopping with me, but not before we celebrated his first-ever diner breakfast. Avery and I signed up for a cooking class together, and I’m taking Lucas thrift-shopping per his request. I keep a ongoing list on my phone, of things my kids mention or ask questions about. It makes the gift-giving and the adventure-planning much easier during holidays.

2. Bring the season into your home. I might not be the craftiest person in the world, but I can throw some pink and red into the mix. I bought Valentine’s candy and set it out in our kitchen. I even replaced it after the three little pigs sneaked down to raid it in the middle of the night. I cut a few paper hearts and hung them from the ceiling in our den. The scraps went into a vase, which now sits on our dining room table as a super chic Valentine’s centerpiece. Celebrating can also be as simple as using the language more often. Guess what’s in a week? Guess what Valentine’s Day is about? One of my favorite things to do is search for holiday-themed content on Netflix.

1. Be clear with your expectations. My husband doesn’t care much for Valentine’s stuff, which has caused a bit of tension in the past. This year, though, I just spelled it out for him. No guessing, no games. I don’t need a wild date or an extravagant gift, but I would like you to show me thoughtfulness throughout the day. Hadassah and I did not sleep well last night, so I went out on a limb. Typically, I’d just complain about being tired all day. Instead, I asked my husband to take her out of our room and give me a half-hour to sleep before the sun came up and the rest of the house woke. The man took her out of our room alright, and right on out the door. He picked up some breakfast and some flowers. We both won.

Cheers! These ideas will work for even the most random (or made-up) occasions. Happy Holidays, every single one of them!

Thanks to every single of one of you who attended my class in January. It was life-giving for me to share my heart with you. I hope it was life-giving for you to hear me cheer for you out loud. You guys are so special, each and every one of you. From the emails to the comments, I’m encouraged to hear bits of your stories and to reflect a bit of His love back at you in the tiniest way.

Feel free to pin or print these little downloads as a thank-you. I’m no designer, but I do love a good catchphrase. These seem to have been two of the most popular from the class, so have at it!

so long, winter skin.

With winter nearly behind us, I figured it was time to come up for air and share some of our favorite cold-weather skincare products. As you can see in the above photos, Ames battles chapped cheeks all winter long. He also has a nasty habit of wiping his nose across his face, making matters worse. The girls’ sweet little legs stay rough most of the cold season, and the rest of us get the typical dry itchy stuff. So what works? We’ve found quite a few skin treats we love!

BabyGanics Daily Lotion. Head to toe, morning and night.
BabyGanics Excema Care Cream. Head to toe, after baths.
California Baby Diaper Rash Cream. On chapped spots; not just for bottoms.
Sugar Bear Skincare Excema Salve. Arms and legs, after baths.
Aquaphor. Old faithful; on face before outdoors and bedtime.

Although I’ve collected them throughout the years, almost all of these products can be purchased at The Baby Grocery Store. Don’t forget, online shoppers enjoy free shipping on most items! Hopefully, we’ll be able to take it down to just one or two items once the weather turns warm. We’ll see. Until then, we’ll keep slatherin’ and soothin’ with what we’ve got!
